I've been trying to be less wasteful when it comes to our food in the home. Getting every last drop out of things that might otherwise expire. I recently purchased a food dehydrator after trying some delicious and expensive watermelon jerky, I was sold and wanted to save and just start doing it myself. A lot of you have been reaching out and asking what I am using for the setup. These are the basics.
FOOD DEHYDRATOR This one I thought was a good option, I read the reviews and thought it was a nice price point (under $50) to give this a whirl. If it didn't work out, I could also return. It has a lot of room but if your family really enjoys this the product goes quick. It's a super quick thing to make so doing a few times a week keeps us from running out.
FOOD SAVER This is kind of an option but with the kids, sometimes the fun is opening and picking a new food and diving in. I haven't been able to make to much bulk because the kids dive in and eat it all right away, which is a good thing. It comes with some bags but here are some extra options.
FOOD SLICER This is a really good option for slicing fruit to dehydrate and great to have in your kitchen. You can use it for a lot of things and its super easy to clean and use, comes with lots of attachments.
SAVER BAG OPTION This one is good if you like to zip it open. Its fairly small perfect size for the kids.
SAVER BAG OPTION This one is a little bit cuter and you can add more in and then tie with a twist.
When I say simple I mean soooo simple, basically cut, turn on and go! I will post some more later that require more ingredients, wanted to get a few of the basic for you.
These are unbelievable. They taste like sour patch kids, super sweet and sour! My kids LOVE them they ate them all right away.
DIRECTIONS: Slice Kiwi about 1/8 inches. Keep the peels on they are actually super nutritious.
Another one of the kids favorite. My kids like both the Gala/Honeycrisp and the Grannysmith for different reasons, the Gala/Honeycrisp is really sweet and the Grannysmith has a sweet and sour taste.
INGREDIENTS: Apple, 1/8 TSP Cinnamon
DIRECTIONS: Core Apple and slice in 1/4 thick pieces. Dust with cinnamon. If you don’t want your apples to turn brown you can soak in water with a half a lemon squeezed in it. I usually don’t do it just to save time and it doesn’t really change the taste.
I hope you guys enjoy this, its a fun activity to do with the kids and you can easily do any of your produce that is about to go bad.
