Burgers and French fries might be my all time favorite food. My husband and I try to eat as healthy as we can and to accomplish this I had to put my own twist on the classic American drive in food that we all love. This version is equally as tasty and doesn't leave you feeling bogged down with grease. I also serve it in a diner basket because that is half the fun, right? I picked up the cute baskets and basket liners at World Market.
When you read the recipe, it's probably going to sound like a lot of spices, but these are spices you should have and can always use. They really dress up food without adding extra calories or sodium. Just a tip, anytime you want to use onion or garlic, always use the powder version not the salt version as the salt version is just all sodium, you can get the same flavor with the powder. Below is my recipe for the Kicked up Turkey Burgers and the no fry fries!
- 1.25 lbs. of lean ground turkey meat
- 1 Tablespoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon seasoning salt
- dash of crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/8 teaspoon ground fresh pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon white pepper
- dash of Worcestershire sauce (about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon)
- dash of sriracha (about 1 teaspoon)
- 1 garlic clove minced
- 1/4 cup of chopped white onion
- 1/4 cup of chopped red pepper diced
- 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro
- English Muffins (for serving)
- Cheese Slices (for serving)
- Toppings of your choice
- 1 large long russet baking potato
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Preheat Oven to 425. Slice potato the long way about 1/4 thick--to make this easy, first I cut it in half for more stability (but make sure you do it the long way). Next, slice into 1/4 pieces again, so now you have long rectangle potato pieces that are 1/4 on every side. Toss Potatoes in Olive Oil, Salt and Pepper.
Lay flat on baking sheet, bake in preheated oven for about 25 min, turning over half way through.
Meanwhile, mix all burger ingredients together in a medium size bowl until thoroughly mixed. Pat out the burgers into about 6 patties. Preheat a non-stick skillet (or you can grill) to about medium heat and toss on the burgers when the skillet is ready. If you use a non-stick skillet you do not have to worry about adding oil to the pan (less fat/less calories). Because this is turkey meat, it needs to be cooked completely through, about 10 minutes on each side. When there is about 2 minutes left or if they start to stick to the pan a good trick is adding water instead of oil, about 1 tablespoon at a time. When your burgers are cooked, add cheese (optional), add about 1 more tablespoon of water and put a lid on the pan, the steam that the water creates will help melt the cheese.
Serve on an English muffin, it is half the calories of a bun. Another serving option if you are looking for less carbs is serving it on a parmesan crisp, still add your favorite toppings. For our toppings we like, sprouts, banana peppers, pickles, avocado, tomato, ketchup and mustard. You can add whatever you like, but that is a great combo in my opinion!
